Why Teesside lawns get moss, and how to fix it
Moss takes over Teesside lawns because heavy clay soil compacts and holds winter water, gardens are often shaded, mowers are set too low and feeding is irregular. Iron sulphate kills existing moss within days, but only aeration, overseeding, correct cutting height and a feeding schedule keep it out.

Moss is a symptom, not the disease
Moss does not attack grass. It occupies space that grass has vacated. Anywhere a lawn thins, moss will colonise if conditions suit it, and conditions across much of Teesside suit it very well: glacial boulder clay that compacts and drains slowly, a damp maritime climate, plenty of shaded enclosed gardens, and a regional habit of cutting lawns short and feeding them once in April.
The five causes, in order of impact
Compaction comes first. On clay, footfall and rain squeeze the soil until air is driven out of the root zone. Grass roots stall while moss, which needs almost nothing from the soil, thrives on the damp surface. Shade comes second, and it is the one owners can least change, though a higher cut and the right seed blend go a long way. Mowing too short is third and entirely self-inflicted: short leaf means less photosynthesis, weaker roots and more light reaching the soil surface where moss spores are waiting. Irregular feeding is fourth, particularly missing the autumn application that hardens the plant for winter. Genuine drainage failure is fifth and least common, but it is real where water stands for a day or more.
Killing what is there
Iron sulphate, applied as a granular or liquid treatment, blackens moss within two to five days. It is cheap, effective and safe when used at label rates, though it stains paving and clothing readily. Dead moss must then be physically removed, because a black mat of dead moss smothers the lawn just as effectively as a green one did. That is why moss control and scarification belong together in a plan, spaced 10 to 14 days apart.
Keeping it out
- Aerate annually on clay gardens. This is the single highest-value intervention in the region.
- Overseed every autumn until the sward is genuinely dense. Density is the long-term defence.
- Raise the mower. 25 to 40mm through the season, higher in shade and in drought.
- Feed to a schedule, especially in autumn, rather than in one spring burst.
- Manage light. Thin dense canopies where permitted, cut back overhanging shrubs, and accept the limits of a deeply shaded corner.
What does not work
Moss killer alone, applied every spring for years, treats the symptom and nothing else, and the lawn is back to the same state each February. Sand scattered on the surface without aeration does almost nothing on clay. And rolling a lawn to "firm it up" makes compaction worse, which is the most counterproductive job in domestic gardening.
A realistic timeline
Autumn one: moss treatment, scarification, aeration, overseeding, autumn feed. Following spring: the lawn looks noticeably better but not finished. Autumn two: repeat the renovation, usually lighter. Spring of year three: a genuinely dense lawn with moss confined to the shadiest corners. Anyone promising that outcome in a single visit is overselling.
